Recently, my friend Gailynne asked me to write an article for our costumers’ guild newsletter. She knows I love mid-century fashion , and she needed someone to write a piece on “ beatnik” fashion for our “On the Road” event coming up in November. I started doing photography about years ago. I fell in love with from the start. My Grandfather originally was a photography as well.


He did mostly weddings and city scapes. This is an affront to me and the free thinking artists who are poets, writers, and musicians of this world. Turtlenecks or horizontal striped shirts emerged as a stereotypical piece of clothing for male beatniks.


Plain sweaters with no design were also a classic beatnik look. Both beatniks and hippies are identified as having radical and somewhat aberrant ideas and as rejecting cultural norms. The Summer of Love that followed saw the hippie revolution spread from the west coast of the US to Europe and the rest of the World. In no time at all it was free love everywhere, tie-dyed t-shirts and huge flairs. Any self-respecting beatnik could not ignore this overwhelming new fashion and in no time at all the psychedelic revolution took over.
